Chapter 43: Without Word or Warning

Overview

Kvothe receives a long-delayed letter from Denna, revealing she has gone abroad for opportunities, studying harp with an unnamed patron and traveling through the Small Kingdoms and Yll. In Elodin’s unusually formal class, Fela successfully names stone to craft a ring and is promoted to Re’lar, underscoring real progress in Naming as Kvothe lags.

Summary

Kvothe watches the winter snow at Anker’s, turning Denna’s ring and debating a cold trip to Imre after her month-long absence. A Cealdish courier arrives with a blood-red–sealed letter addressed in Denna’s hand, explaining it changed hands across ports and towns before reaching him. Kvothe pays a fair price and opens it.

Denna’s letter apologizes for leaving without notice and explains she has gone abroad seeking better prospects. She describes traveling through the Small Kingdoms and Yll, milder weather easing her lungs, time at sea, broadened cursing, and seeing an Adem mercenary. She remains enamored with the harp and is staying with an unnamed, skilled gentleman to further her study. She closes with warmth and a postscript about Kvothe’s lute case.

Later, Elodin’s class begins unusually: he arrives on time, formally robed, and speaks from the lectern about the University’s ancient focus on Naming—once the most coveted skill. He emphasizes that naming cannot be taught by rote, yet sometimes succeeds.

Elodin calls Fela forward, announcing she has found the name of stone eight times. He instructs her to make a ring as proof. After tense minutes and a corrective smack to break her over-focusing, Fela quietly speaks to the stone. Cracking sounds follow; gravel spills from her hands, revealing a flawless black stone ring.

Elodin jubilantly promotes Fela to Re’lar and places the ring on her left hand, warning the right signifies something else. The class crowds around as Fela displays the ring’s thousand faceted swirls, while Kvothe, mindful of his halting progress, witnesses a clear milestone in Naming.
