Chapter 33: Fire

Overview

Kvothe’s allies execute a coordinated strike to neutralize Ambrose’s binding doll. Fela lures Ambrose away while Devi conducts sympathetic attacks and Kvothe stages a fire to breach Ambrose’s room and destroy the mommet.

Publicly humiliating Ambrose shifts leverage to Kvothe, who also steals a claim slip for Denna’s ring and much-needed coin.

Summary

Kvothe receives a late, bungled dinner invitation from Denna and sends a reply via the same boy, then heads to a forest rendezvous. Wilem, Simmon, Mola, and Fela gather for their plan to neutralize Ambrose’s mommet; Fela is to distract Ambrose. Mola arrives with Devi, who, furious at Ambrose, offers help. They coordinate signals and materials for wax and clay attacks, with Devi confident in her sympathetic craft.

Fela departs to keep Ambrose occupied, guided by Devi and Mola’s tactics. Kvothe and Wilem go to the Golden Pony, where Sim’s alchemical stickiness prepares Kvothe’s hands. A staged alarm—Basil crying “Fire!”—prompts Kvothe to charge upstairs. Seeing smoke at Ambrose’s door, he uses a concealed siege stone to smash it in and enters the smoke-filled bedroom where a burning bureau suggests the mommet’s hiding place.

Kvothe smashes the window and, shielding his hands with velvet curtains, heaves drawers outside as flames intensify, creating a chimney draft. In the street, Simmon aggressively stamps the debris, ensuring anything surviving is destroyed. Devi’s earlier lack of result with wax implies a clay mommet; the escalating burn eradicates it. Helpers douse the remains while Kvothe maintains the heroic façade, bandaging a superficial burn.

Ambrose arrives enraged, but onlookers witness Kvothe’s “rescue,” further souring Ambrose’s image. Kvothe departs with wounded dignity. Later by the bonfire, Fela and Sim recount confronting Ambrose after the blaze, and the group shares pranks planted at the scene.

Kvothe reveals his true prize: a jeweler’s claim slip for a white-gold, blue-stone ring—Denna’s—and admits lifting it (and nearly six talents) from Ambrose’s purse during the confrontation, converting the operation’s success into leverage and funds.
