Chapter 62: Crisis
Overview
Kvothe anxiously awaits word as the Maer endures his worst night and then stabilizes. Sent to fetch Caudicus’s draught, Kvothe confirms Caudicus is a real arcanist, not a blundering fraud. Caudicus dismisses the Chandrian but shares significant Lackless history. The Maer remains distant, signaling skepticism and political caution toward Kvothe.
Summary
Kvothe rises early, stocks more cod liver oil, and scours Tinnery Street in hopes of finding Denna, then returns to the Maer’s estates by freight lift to conserve coin and avoid notice. To keep up appearances, he waits in his rooms, playing tak with Bredon, who shares court stories and clarifies the complex social weight of rings, notably Stapes’s quiet, formidable influence.
When no summons comes by midday, Kvothe fears the Maer has died and considers flight, but an urgent card arrives: Immediately. In the Maer’s room, Kvothe finds selas masking sickroom odors and Alveron stabilized, claiming to have “passed the crisis.” Despite Kvothe’s careful tea, the Maer coolly asks him to fetch Caudicus’s medicine, signaling continued doubt.
With Caudicus, Kvothe reclaims his and the Maer’s rings and probes for lore, but Caudicus derides the Chandrian as superstition. He instead offers deep history on the Lackless lineage and court gossip, then openly compounds the Maer’s amber draught. Watching the simple recipe, Kvothe briefly suspects incompetence before confirming Caudicus’s true Arcanum status by the numbing bite of a genuine guilder amulet.
Kvothe returns, warms small talk, and doses the sipquicks with the fresh medicine, noting the birds’ vigorous health. The Maer’s polite reserve makes his stance plain: he remains in control, keeps his options open, and still does not trust Kvothe.
