Chapter 40: Puppet

Overview

Kvothe, Wilem, and Simmon visit Puppet in the Archives’ depths. Puppet’s odd theatrics give way to sharp insight: he distinguishes seeing from looking, carves Kvothe’s profile, and asserts the Amyr were disbanded by the church, not Emperor Nalto. He rebukes curiosity about the four-plate door and points them to Renfalque’s Dictum.

Summary

Guided by Wilem and Simmon to Sub-three, Kvothe meets Puppet, an eccentric resident among books, candles, and marionettes. After a mock-ceremonial entrance as “Taborlin,” Puppet discards theatrics and studies Kvothe closely, whittling his profile while lecturing on the difference between looking and truly seeing. He dubs Kvothe a look-er, not yet a true E’lir.

Amid shelves of puppets, Puppet demonstrates keen perception, reading Kvothe’s posture and thoughts. He directs them to Renfalque’s Dictum for etymological ranks and animates a Tehlin priest marionette, using the performance to underscore his points about seriousness and judgment.

When Kvothe asks who disbanded the Amyr, Puppet states the church—via pontifical authority—ended them, not Emperor Nalto. As the Tehlin puppet strikes down a peasant girl, Wilem reluctantly concedes a lost wager about the answer. Discussion of contradictory copies of Reis’s Lights leads to suggestions of transcription or church alteration.

Kvothe then asks about the locked four-plate door above. Puppet grows stern, warns it is not a student’s concern, and Kvothe backs down. The belling tower ends the visit; Simmon hurries off, and Puppet returns to reading, asking them to bring Kvothe back so he can “finish” his work.

Who Appears

  • Puppet
Eccentric Archive-dweller; perceptive and theatrical. Carves Kvothe’s profile, teaches about seeing, asserts the church disbanded the Amyr, warns off the door.
  • Kvothe
Seeks answers about the Amyr; engages Puppet, learns to ‘see,’ asks about the four-plate door, and is told the church ended the Amyr.
  • Wilem
Leads the group to Puppet; wagers on Amyr history, loses; offers theories on altered texts and transcription.
  • Simmon
Coaches Kvothe to be polite; accompanies the visit, asks about ranks’ meanings, and departs when the belling tower sounds.
