Chapter 95: Chased
Overview
Felurian sings from the moonlit pool, her voice irresistibly drawing the company. Kvothe resists briefly, then, rejecting fear and seizing the mystery, steps into the clearing despite his companions’ alarm. Hespe restrains Dedan from following. Kvothe chases Felurian into the trees, where he surrenders to her and they make love.
Summary
At the moonlit pool, Felurian appears naked and begins to sing. Though her voice seems too soft to carry, Kvothe hears it clearly and feels an insistent pull. He steadies himself, recognizing the song from Dedan’s tale, and struggles against the lure.
Behind Kvothe, Marten mutters in fear, Tempi retreats in shock, and Dedan tenses while Hespe watches him closely. When Felurian sings again, memories and desire flood Kvothe. Weighing fear against wonder, he decides not to be ruled by superstition, declaring he will meet the others in three days and stepping into the clearing.
Felurian laughs, nonhuman and bright, then darts away. Kvothe gives chase, running with impossible speed and lightness as his companions shout and struggle—Hespe forces Dedan to the ground to stop him from following. Felurian leads Kvothe through scrub and moonlit trees, always just ahead, teasingly out of reach until he finally catches her.
They embrace, and the encounter swiftly becomes passionate. Kvothe moves with certainty, matching Felurian’s rhythm and cries as their intimacy builds to a consuming climax. He surrenders fully to her, the chapter closing as he reaches a breaking intensity.
