Chapter 104: The Cthaeh

Overview

While Felurian completes perilous work on the shaed using iron, Kvothe wanders and encounters the Cthaeh, an all-seeing oracle in a great tree. The Cthaeh reveals that Cinder led the bandits, hints the Maer can lead to the Amyr, and cruelly exposes Denna’s abuse, driving Kvothe back shattered.

Summary

Kvothe continues shaping his shaed under Felurian’s guidance, learning to alter it without harming it. One morning, Felurian asks for iron and sends Kvothe away while she works a dangerous, secret task. Disturbed by her intensity, Kvothe wanders Dayward into open country.

He discovers a vast, willowlike tree swarmed with butterflies and meets the Cthaeh, an oracular being that kills butterflies as it speaks. The Cthaeh refuses small labels, reads Kvothe’s purpose, and presses him to ask about the Chandrian rather than the Amyr. It derides human arrogance and hints that only far places like the Stormwal would treat such questions seriously.

The Cthaeh claims the Maer has unknowingly come near the Amyr and that staying close to the Maer will lead Kvothe to them. It focuses on the Chandrian, saying Cinder is Kvothe’s true target, and cruelly describes Kvothe’s parents’ deaths. It asserts Kvothe recently saw Cinder—the graceful bandit leader who escaped.

The Cthaeh further torments Kvothe by describing Denna’s abusive patron and accusing Kvothe of abandoning her. Overwhelmed, Kvothe flees back to Felurian’s clearing, shaken and bloodied from his panicked flight.

Felurian, exhausted from her work, confirms she has finished and anxiously examines Kvothe. She asks if he spoke to the Cthaeh, then reassures him when his eyes seem clear. Felurian explains the Cthaeh never lies but only speaks to hurt and can break minds; Kvothe, wracked with grief, weeps.
