Overview

Summary
Confined to his rooms pending the Maer’s recovery, Kvothe avoids Severen-Low and Denna, distracting himself with tak games with Bredon and managing a surge of gossip after Caudicus spread word of his story-genealogy. He channels informants into written reports, accumulating scandalous notes.
Summoned, Kvothe finds the Maer improved and uncommunicative. After Kvothe tends the flits—still distressingly healthy despite the poisoned feed—the Maer has him finish a cup of tea. Kvothe later realizes it was laced with laudanum, a subtle test that leaves him dulled and vulnerable.
At Caudicus’s, the arcanist returns Kvothe’s rings and observes him closely. While drugged, Kvothe nearly betrays his arcane knowledge when asked for acid, but he bluffs as an overconfident lordling. Caudicus appears intrigued and suspicious as he mixes the Maer’s dose.
Back in Alveron’s rooms, Stapes watches Kvothe with hostility while the flits remain vigorous, undermining Kvothe’s case against Caudicus. Sensing danger if the flits do not die soon, Kvothe refines an escape plan and scouts the gardens and roofs by night.
From a tower window, Kvothe spots sympathy lamps burning and witnesses Stapes meeting privately with Caudicus. Stapes departs empty-handed, implying no errand—only a clandestine conversation—confirming for Kvothe that the Maer’s trusted manservant is entangled with the poisoner.
