Chapter 109: Barbarians and Madmen

Overview

Kvothe accompanies Tempi to Ademre, learning the stakes: if Kvothe fails Shehyn’s scrutiny, Tempi may be exiled. Tempi subjects Kvothe to brutal training cycles of Ketan, running, sparring, and Lethani discussions, emphasizing concise Ademic speech and right action.

Kvothe discovers the Spinning Leaf mindset, adds swordwork, and inches toward proving himself worthy.

Summary

Kvothe chooses to accompany Tempi to Ademre despite wanting to return to Severen and reconcile with Denna. Dedan, Hespe, and Marten head south to report to the Maer, while Kvothe and Tempi go northeast toward Haert. Tempi explains he needed permission to teach and that instructing an outsider broke a deeper trust; if Kvothe proves unworthy, Tempi risks being “cut away,” a fate worse than death.

They agree Kvothe must fully submit to Tempi’s instruction before facing Shehyn. Tempi enforces a harsh regimen: run, perform the Ketan, walk, then discuss the Lethani in Ademic, repeating in cycles. Tempi forbids gestural embellishments during Lethani talks, insisting answers arise from deeper, unthinking understanding. Exhaustion strips Kvothe’s overthinking; his earnest, immediate replies please Tempi more than careful ones.

On the third day Kvothe collapses; Tempi praises his discipline but cautions knowing limits is also of the Lethani. Kvothe realizes he has been speaking fluent Ademic, revealing his immersion. Tempi critiques Kvothe’s wordiness, teaching the Adem preference for delicate, economical speech where meaning is inferred. Tempi briefly shows pride in Kvothe’s progress.

As Kvothe recovers, he continues lighter cycles and discovers a mental state he calls Spinning Leaf: a relaxed, clear anticipation that helps produce apt answers, unlike the practical Heart of Stone. By the eighth day Tempi adds sparring; Kvothe’s joy in fighting draws reproach, as Adem take no pleasure in combat—only duty and sorrow. Loving the fight is for barbarians and madmen.

On the eleventh day Tempi incorporates swordwork into the Ketan, lengthening each cycle. Kvothe hardens under the fifteen-hour days of running, forms, sparring, and Lethani discourse. With Haert drawing nearer, their aim is clear: ensure Kvothe seems “iron worth striking” so Tempi is not cut away when they face Shehyn.
