Chapter 4: Tar and Tin

Kvothe, short on funds and needing quick commission, goes to the Fishery and consults Jaxim at the Stocks. Learning a caravan bought out the deck lamps, Kvothe chooses the tedious, reliable project of making two sympathy lamps despite the risk of wasted materials if he errs.

After an exhausting day, Kvothe returns late to Anker’s, secures cold food and a bottled beer, and carries them to the rooftops. He meets Auri, trades playful banter about objects “thinking” they are other things, and follows her into the Underthing to avoid the night chill.

They warm the potatoes against steam pipes and share a quiet meal by the light of Kvothe’s thieves’ lamp and Auri’s small green luminary. Kvothe promises music after admissions; Auri presses for sooner, and they compromise with gentle humor while Kvothe respects her strict rules about silence and privacy.

After eating, Auri guides Kvothe through the Nodway, Vaults, and Billows toward a concealed route into the Archives. Kvothe explains his ban from the Archives and the ventilation crawl he discovered, acknowledging the severe consequences if caught but judging the risk necessary to prepare for admissions.

Kvothe changes into worn clothes stashed below, then commits to the narrow, dirty passage to reach the Stacks. Trusting the perpetual “night” within the Archives to cover his presence, he moves ahead, valuing the study time more than the danger.
