Chapter 21: Piecework
Overview
Kvothe is barred from Fishery materials until he meets Kilvin, who pushes him to abandon easy piecework and pursue ambitious projects. Overstrained, Kvothe collapses and is taken to the Medica, where Mola learns of the failed break-in for Ambrose’s ring and agrees to cover for him.
The chapter raises stakes: Ambrose’s reward and reporting orders threaten exposure, while Kilvin’s challenge forces Kvothe toward riskier, more meaningful work. Sim and Mola’s rapport also begins.
Summary
Kvothe limps out before dawn to find willow bark for his bruised knees, then heads to the Fishery to earn money. At Stocks, Basil shows a note from Kilvin forbidding tools to Kvothe and sending him to Kilvin. Basil also warns that a young, blue-cloaked girl has been lingering outside asking about a charm, risking Kilvin’s wrath over rumored illicit sales.
In Kilvin’s office, Kvothe helps with glassblowing while Kilvin challenges his reliance on piecework. Kilvin criticizes Kvothe’s safe, repetitive projects and urges him to make something worthy of a Re’lar. Overheated and weakened by the previous night’s injuries, Kvothe collapses.
Kilvin carries Kvothe to the Medica, where Mola treats him. She notes University orders to report suspicious wounds after Ambrose posted a reward for the thief who took a keepsake ring. Kvothe denies stealing anything but refuses details, fearing expulsion.
Simmon and Wilem arrive; Sim blurts that Kvothe tried to recover a woman’s ring from Ambrose. Mola, realizing the context, softens and agrees to list heat exhaustion on her report. Wilem cautions Mola about Kvothe’s temper, noting his eyes darken when he’s ready to snap. Mola restitches Kvothe’s elbow properly and advises rest and water.
As tension eases, Sim asks Mola to lunch and she agrees. Kvothe leaves with his injuries redressed, Kilvin’s challenge echoing, and his complicity in the failed break-in still secret.
