Chapter 145: Stories

Overview

Ambrose’s return spurs Kvothe to rebuild his gram and refocus his training. Flush with funds, he invests in tools, books, and friends. Rumors of his Vintas deeds spread, which Kvothe indulges. With Wilem and Simmon, he recounts Felurian and confronts the unsettling question of how Fae time altered his age.

Summary

With spring’s arrival, Ambrose returns to the University, prompting Kvothe to skip classes and spend a day crafting a new gram for protection. He resumes private Ketan practice in the northern woods. Hungover at admissions, Kvothe fumbles questions; his tuition is set at eighteen talents and five, and Bloodless royalties and Stock sales leave him unusually flush with coin.

Enjoying prosperity, Kvothe outfits himself with proper clothes, ink, tools, and shoes. He buys rare books, including an old Yllish dictum, The Heroborica, and Termigus Techina. He treats friends to dinners and gives Auri dresses and ribbons, marveling at still having money left.

As roads reopen, stories of Kvothe’s Vintas exploits reach the University. He quietly frequents alehouses to eavesdrop, occasionally nudging details. Tales vary wildly—rescues of maidens from bandits, ogres, or shamble-men; feats by sword or stormfire—though none reflect the truth closely. The Felurian song arrives with fewer distortions.

Pressed by Wilem and Simmon, Kvothe recounts Felurian honestly. Sim questions whether time in the Fae aged Kvothe. The friends debate stories versus scholarship, then ask Kvothe to estimate his stay. Without days or nights to mark time, Kvothe tallies lessons, meals, and recovery after the Cthaeh, concluding it was at least several months, possibly up to a year.

Wilem wryly toasts Kvothe’s uncertain birthdays, sealing the uneasy realization that Fae time may have altered Kvothe’s age—and underscoring how legends and truth diverge as his reputation grows.
