Chapter 72: Horses
Overview
Kvothe completes a song for Meluan, then secretly follows Denna at night, hoping to learn her patron’s identity. Instead, he witnesses Denna rescue a young girl from an assault and counsel her on stark life choices, revealing Denna’s pragmatism and values. Kvothe gains insight into Denna but not her patron.
Summary
Kvothe finishes “Nothing but Roses” for Lady Meluan earlier than expected and decides to look for Denna on Cendling night. Not finding her at the Four Tapers, he spots Denna striding purposefully through Severen and, suspecting she is meeting her secret patron, chooses to follow her, cloaked and cautious.
The streets grow rougher as Denna turns into a dim alley. Kvothe climbs to a rooftop to avoid being seen and witnesses a woman in a white dress crumpled on the ground, a bald man nearby, and Denna holding a knife to the man’s throat. Denna helps the shaken girl escape, warns the man off with a pointed threat, then escorts the girl back toward safer streets and into a respectable inn.
Kvothe slips into the inn unseen and bribes a serving girl for privacy to eavesdrop. Denna gently questions the girl, learning she fled home after an eldest son’s advances and a stolen-silver mistake, chasing fairy-tale hopes. Denna harshly dismisses such fantasies, insisting the world demands payment for choices.
Denna lays out three options with coins on the table: apprentice at a basic trade with room and board; return home after the bruise fades and weather the lifelong social cost; or, if choosing sex work, do it as a “duchess,” cultivating manners, dress, and clientele to retain control—while acknowledging that even the finest horse is still ridden. She emphasizes boundaries: if demands exceed one’s limits, leave and accept the burned bridges.
As Denna departs with the girl, her parting lesson lingers: decide what you want most and what price you will pay. Kvothe remains alone, finishing his wine, reflecting on Denna’s hard-earned pragmatism and the unseen costs shaping her life.
