Chapter 123: The Spinning Leaf

Overview

Under scrutiny from Adem leaders, Kvothe faces his admission test: enter the sword tree, retrieve an item, and demonstrate character. He perceives and Names the wind, stilling the tree. Rejecting all offerings, he returns empty-handed, marks himself with blood, and signals willingness. Shehyn’s nod indicates acceptance.

Summary

At breakfast, Vashet collects Kvothe for his test. Penthe silently offers support, watched by a tense dining hall. Vashet leads Kvothe to the sword tree, where a larger audience than usual—including white-clad heads of other Adem schools—has gathered. Vashet explains he must enter the storm of leaves, choose an item at the base, and bring it out, with conduct and choice both carrying meaning.

Kvothe approaches the lashing canopy, considering pride and the implications of different strategies. Slipping into the calm of Spinning Leaf, he perceives the wind’s pattern and steps inside, moving deliberately. He reaches the trunk uncut and surveys the offerings: swords, a red shirt, an arrow, a scroll case, a massive gold bar, flowers, coins, a whetstone, a book, thread, a stone—and his own lute case, whose presence angers him and shatters his calm.

Stripped of the wind’s name, Kvothe circles anxiously, doubting every choice and fearing a clumsy exit. A sudden urge to relieve himself breaks his tension; he laughs, regains composure, recalls the wind as an old friend, and gently Names it. The gale hushes and the sword tree falls utterly still.

Kvothe leaves the offerings untouched, walks out calmly, and stops before Shehyn. He draws his palm across a leaf to blood and presents a closed, upturned fist—willing. After a long moment, Shehyn nods, and only then does the wind return.
