Chapter 3: Luck
Overview
Admissions begin at the University, highlighting how tuition stakes endanger Kvothe. He reconnects with Fela, learns Elodin is launching a class that invited her but not him, and declines her generous interview slot. Kvothe trades tiles with Wilem for money and resolves to prepare without Archive access.
Summary
Admissions open with long lines and tense students as tuition hinges on brief interviews. Kvothe, nearly broke, joins the lottery, reflecting that high tuition could bar him from returning. The square bustles with food carts and trading as students angle for favorable interview times.
Fela leaves her place to stand with Kvothe. They compare studies: Fela mentions Archives work, chemistry, and Manifold Maths; Kvothe lists Medica observation, Fishery work, Sympathy, and improving his Siaru. Fela reveals Elodin is starting a class and has invited her, surprising Kvothe since Elodin sponsored him to Re’lar but has not contacted him.
They trade rumors about Elodin’s eccentricities, easing the sting of Kvothe’s exclusion. At the front, Kvothe draws Felling—Noon, while Fela draws an exceptionally late slot. Fela downplays preparation and offers Kvothe her tile. Kvothe, tempted by more time or resale value, declines, not wanting to take her luck and mindful of her past generosity.
After Fela leaves, Wilem arrives and teases Kvothe for missed flirting. They compare tiles; Wilem buys Kvothe’s later slot for a jot and three drabs and a corners-partner concession. Kvothe pockets the coin and decides to keep his new, earlier slot instead of trading further.
Pressed by Wilem about how he will prepare without the Archives, Kvothe hints at alternative methods. Despite financial strain and the Archive ban, he commits to readying for interviews by other means, determined to control his tuition fate.
