Chapter 136: Interlude—Close to Forgetting
Overview
During an interlude at the Waystone, two soldiers rob the inn and brutally beat Kvothe when he resists. Bast returns, takes control, and uses both mundane and fae methods to treat Kvothe’s injuries. The scene exposes Kvothe’s diminished state, Bast’s fierce loyalty, and a brittle tension about Kvothe’s identity.
Summary
Kvothe pauses his telling to tend the inn, sending Bast to Shep’s wake with a fine bottle to represent them. While preparing a simple cold supper, Chronicler informally notes that the sword behind the bar is not Caesura; Kvothe cheerfully confirms it and deflects.
Two soldiers enter, announce they will rob the place, and demand Kvothe’s purse. Kvothe tries to placate, then strikes first, briefly staggering one. The bearded soldier overpowers him; Kvothe’s attempted hand motions accomplish nothing, and he is beaten down with fists, a knee, and a bottle. At Chronicler’s warning that Bast will soon return, the men grab wine and leave.
Kvothe laughs darkly and says he “forgot who I was.” Bast returns, panics at Kvothe’s state, and Kvothe snaps before apologizing. He lists his injuries and says the soldiers reminded him of something he was close to forgetting.
Bast takes command, stitches Kvothe’s scalp with a hair-threaded needle, and performs a subtle fae remedy with milk and honey, drawing the blood-harm to himself. He rebukes Kvothe as an idiot, orders food and the story resumed, then sits with a fierce smile showing blood on his teeth.
