Chapter 13

Overview

Carl and Donut size up two neighboring rival teams and learn that the hostile womantaurs Genesis and Rapture are dangerous domination-magic users, not mere brutes. Then they discover that the bizarre half-mantaur in the next garage is likely Corcunda, Dong Quixote's long-lost friend. Their attempt to avoid that emotional complication fails immediately when an accidental remark triggers a new multi-part quest with a valuable eleventh-floor reward.

Summary

Carl, Donut, Chiyome, and the bugbears watch garage number two open and see two female mantaur racers, Genesis and Rapture. Their appearance and strange movement unsettle Carl and Donut, but the important detail is that both are level 95 Lady Mantaur Dominators who worship Enyo instead of Grull. When Radoslav offers them a beer, Rapture fires a wrist-mounted harpoon into a rolling can, ruining it, and the pair openly insult Carl's group before leaving for town.

After the womantaurs go, Chiyome warns Carl not to dismiss them as fools. She explains that both racers use domination magic, which can drain energy or mana from victims. Carl checks with Mordecai and learns that Carl's Mind Balance should make him immune, while Donut's high charm should protect her as well, turning the encounter into both a warning and a small tactical reassurance.

Attention then shifts to garage number three, where a shadowy figure in a black vinyl suit watches them. Carl realizes the figure is a half-mantaur, split vertically down the middle, and Chiyome explains that such beings survive inside special suits after a spell called Split Personality. Donut connects the sight to Dong Quixote's stories about his missing friend Corcunda, and Carl reluctantly agrees it is probably him.

Because Carl expects any involvement to create trouble, he decides they should not tell Dong Quixote unless forced to. That plan collapses immediately when Donut hesitates, Carl speaks aloud, and the system assigns a new quest to reunite Dong with Corcunda, also called Corky. The quest reveals that Corcunda's other half, Porky, is also somewhere on the floor and that they will need a fleshmancer to restore him; in return, two stand-ins of Carl and Donut's choosing would be sent to the arena on the eleventh floor. The chapter ends with Jasha waking up in confusion and asking for his missing beer.
