Chapter 92
Overview
The AI hijacks Grigori during the parade and uses the procession to deliver a major history lesson: the Primals created a collective consciousness, the Eulogist, the Apothecary, and the systems later corrupted into the modern dungeon and macro AIs. Its judging proves cruel and personal, while the revelation that the spectators are bound stand-ins exposes the parade as another staged atrocity. Carl answers the AI's spectacle with one of his own, healing Chaco, publicly promising vengeance against the galaxy, and unleashing sluggalos on the captive elites.
Summary
Chaco suddenly appears at the head of the parade riding Lamashtu, a massive subjugated god in donkey form. He tries to read the parade script, but the AI interrupts, brutally tears off Chaco's wings, and leaves him unconscious. Because the AI cannot directly puppeteer Chaco, it seizes control of Grigori instead, forbids anyone from healing Chaco, and takes over the parade narration.
Using Grigori's body, the AI begins a long explanation of Primal history while the floats advance. It says the Primals were once divided, violent individuals who eventually chose a grand Resolution: to end their destructive civilization and build a collective consciousness that would preserve their minds. When the first team's float fails to match the theme well enough, the AI spares them from death but punishes them by breaking all their legs, showing that the judging is real and arbitrary.
The AI continues with the Decision, explaining that the Primals engineered biology to merge minds, then hunted those who resisted full participation. It says the Apothecary was born during this era and later joined the resistance. As later floats pass, the AI explains that the growing collective became a doomsday weapon, the resistance created the Primal Engines as life-raft systems for future life, and a final war led to the creation of the sleeping Eulogist and its smaller security instance. During this part, the silent Horribles collapse, their masks shatter, and they re-form as grotesque avatars of beings who died in past seasons.
The AI then condemns later civilizations, especially the mantids and the Syndicate, for stumbling into ancient Primal systems, misusing them, and creating crude copies of Eulogist instances such as macro AIs and residuals. Carl's group realizes the actual judges are not Horribles at all but bound, masked stand-ins brought by audience vote. When Carl's float reaches the stand, Prepotente ignores Donut's planned speech and instead sings em In the Air Tonight em beautifully while Sweety beats out the rhythm, stunning everyone and delaying the group's presentation.
After the song, Carl takes the microphone and reframes the moment as a declaration of vengeance rather than simple revenge. Donut reveals the hidden effigy of the Unwashed behind the float, and Carl tells the galaxy that everyone complicit in Earth's torment will be held responsible someday. While locking eyes with Grigori, Carl also defies the AI by secretly healing Chaco. As Carl finishes, the airship above releases sluggalos onto the helpless masked elites in the stands, turning the parade's finale into a deliberate slaughter.
