Chapter 21

Overview

Carl and Donut execute a desperate plan against Prison Pocket, the healing kangaroo gatekeeper, by using gremlins as bait and a joey skin as the key to surviving the boss's acidic pouch. After Genesis kills the engineer instead of cleanly retrieving a skin, Carl improvises, dons the costume, and destroys Prison Pocket from the inside while Chiyome kills the other boss. The victory clears the obstacle, but the delay costs Carl and Donut valuable race position, leaving rival teams ahead at the end of Heat Two.

Summary

Carl, Donut, and their temporary allies approach the giant kangaroo boss Prison Pocket while hail worsens around them. Carl explains that NPCs can sometimes take items under special circumstances, which matters because his plan depends on getting one of the joey skins. Rapture proposes a possible alliance for future races, but the conversation ends when Prison Pocket notices them, calls them babies, and reveals the burned engineer Niels trapped in his pouch while dead joey skins hang nearby.

To create openings, Carl and Donut repeatedly use Emergency Gremlin scrolls and send the summoned NPCs toward the boss. Prison Pocket immediately shoves gremlins into his acidic pouch or eats them to restore his health, proving that ordinary attacks will not be enough. Donut's magic missiles injure him only briefly before he heals, so Carl summons Little Gunter and has Pontiff strike the child-like summon with a huge hammer. The delayed force launches Gunter into Prison Pocket, flipping the boss onto his back and giving the group a chance to act.

Genesis uses her grappling hook, but instead of retrieving a dead joey skin as planned, she kills Niels and drags his body back, preventing Carl from claiming the engineer. Carl angrily strips the joey skin costume from Niels's corpse and equips it, learning that it grants protection from the pouch's seeping acid and a strong jump skill, but also forces him to move like a kangaroo and negates some of his usual clothing bonuses. While Donut keeps Prison Pocket occupied and the boss continues healing by consuming gremlins, Chiyome puts on another joey costume and defeats the second kangaroo boss off to the side, allowing Dwight to continue the race.

Once Carl adjusts to hopping, he leaps onto Prison Pocket's pouch and lets the boss grab him and stuff him inside. Protected by the costume, Carl claws his way through the foul, acidic interior, reaches the bottom of the pouch, and drops two hobgoblin big boom satchels there. He then uses Gloom Wraith Phase and a powerful hop to launch himself back out, detonates the explosives, and blows Prison Pocket apart from within. Carl survives the blast and earns achievements, but while he is recovering on the roadside, the APV and GTO race past. A surviving gremlin insults him before timing out and exploding, and the Heat Two results show Team Sparkles in first while the Royal Court of Princess Donut finishes seventh.
