Chapter 36

Overview

After Eris disappears, Carl realizes her chaos mark may force one of several catastrophic outcomes, making his already limited control over the race even worse. The mark immediately has consequences when it permanently manifests Imani's powerful summon Jacobus, proving Eris's interference can alter the rules. Carl ends the chapter convinced the group needs a plan to break or outmaneuver the system, starting with the war mages.

Summary

After Eris leaves, Carl and Donut compare the vanished divine notification they both briefly saw. Carl is shaken because Eris's coin and chaos mark seem to have attached a new set of possible disasters to his future: Donut might die, Carl might lose his feet, most of his friends might die, or some other unclear outcome might occur, with the fifth option making the result random. While Quemada keeps talking about Emberus and martyrdom, Carl hurriedly records everything Eris said, including her warnings about Britney, Florin, and the Pineapple Cabaret.

Carl realizes the eye on his chest is still open and forces it shut. The encounter hardens Carl's belief that the racers have almost no control while they remain trapped inside the gods' system, so the real answer may be to break the game itself. He thinks of a possible plan, but it seems so reckless and suicidal that he dismisses it for the moment and wonders whether the war mages might offer another path.

Imani notices Carl's physical distress, then suddenly receives a new development of her own: her former card summon Jacobus becomes permanently active and appears in person. Carl identifies this as another consequence of his Scavenger's Daughter patch. Jacobus, a level 90 Reverse Tooth Fairy, immediately acts like a threat, but Imani restrains him and refuses to let him target their allies, confirming that the short-term summon is now an ongoing presence.

The new development makes Donut wonder whether other card-bound beings, such as Raul, could ever be made permanently real, though Carl doubts it because this change came from a god-level effect. When Prepotente arrives, Carl explains Eris's visit and the chaos mark through chat, triggering alarm and speculation from the group. By the end of the chapter, Carl says they need to gather, discuss his risky ideas, and question the war mages first, because whatever Eris has set in motion now demands an organized response.
