Chapter 29

Overview

Carl's public warning detonates the Plenty's carefully managed secrecy, sending the goat judges into mass panic and exposing how deeply their leaders feared this information getting out. Gamori admits she concealed the truth from her herd, while Harbinger's arrival reveals both his connection to the Matriarch and how isolated he has been in trying to respond to the larger threat. The chapter ends with the AI instantly killing Harbinger when he moves against Carl, underscoring the AI's power, volatility, and willingness to intervene directly.

Summary

After Donut tells the goat judges that Carl and Donut have received messages about the danger in the tunnels, the studio erupts into panic. The goats react to the news as if it confirms prophecy or end-times, shouting about the Epicure, true judgment, and a coming stampede. Carl argues by message with Prime Minister Victory and Orren, concluding that the Plenty leadership has been withholding vital information from its own people.

As the panic spreads, only one goat remains composed: Gamori, the Matriarch of the Plenty and lead engineer of the tunnel project. She condemns Carl as reckless, impulsive, and too dangerous to move among the herd, explaining that his public declaration has triggered a stampede mentality among her people. When Carl presses her on why the goats were present if they wanted to avoid this outcome, Gamori breaks down and admits the council wanted to honor Carl and Donut because of their connection to the Plenty's champion and because the herd admires them, but she deliberately hid the truth because she feared exactly this reaction.

Before Carl can calm the situation, Harbinger teleports into the room carrying a massive pulse rifle. He addresses Gamori as his mother, revealing a direct personal tie to the Plenty's leadership, and accuses her of ignoring his warnings about the unstable AI, the Residuals in the dungeon, and the threat posed by Carl's growing influence. Harbinger declares that he has sacrificed everything to protect the herd, says he has been abandoned and left alone, and decides he will finally act to protect both the herd and the universe by targeting Carl.

When Harbinger turns his weapon on Carl, the AI intervenes instantly and brutally, exploding Harbinger from the inside before he can fire. Carl, Donut, and Lexis are drenched in gore, and Gamori coldly accepts the death as the cost of a stampede before her hologram vanishes. In the aftermath, Zev checks in, Lexis reveals she had drawn a hidden gun but never fired, and she dryly notes that despite the carnage, the live broadcast has produced the highest viewer ratings the show has ever seen.
