Chapter 11

Overview

Carl and Donut spend the first part of the chapter dealing with the mess from Rishi's junk-filled fan box, with Donut enraged by cheap bootleg cosmetics and Carl trying to salvage anything useful by having Mordecai reset an old cleaner bot. In the garage, Hedy explains that strange temporary gremlin workers automatically handle post-race repairs, then warns Carl that survival in the next heats will depend on knowing which racers are threats. The chapter shifts the focus from loot cleanup to preparation and distrust before the race continues.

Summary

In the aftermath of opening Rishi's filthy fan box, Donut keeps sorting through the garbage and becomes furious over a bootleg makeup palette from her brand. Samantha digs through the pile as well, finds a lipstick shade she likes, and provokes Donut further by claiming it for herself. Donut complains to Zev in chat, using the bad merchandise as more evidence that she should control her own branding decisions.

Because the junk has flooded the safe room, Carl focuses on cleanup instead of the argument. He stops the cleaner bot from simply destroying everything, since some of the mess might still contain useful items, and calls Mordecai over to help. Carl hands Mordecai an older white cleaner bot from his inventory, and Mordecai begins resetting it so they can make practical use of it despite its grim past in Architect Houston's operating theater.

After they finish resetting buffs and preparing to leave, the group heads into the garage. There, Carl finds Splash Zone, Dong, Mongo, and Rend sitting together while Hedy casually entertains them by balancing and flipping a huge wrench on one finger. The scene shows the team in a brief lull between heats, with Mongo and Rend reacting excitedly when Donut arrives.

Carl then notices unfamiliar gremlins swarming over the race vehicle and trying to move equipment around, including the giant tommy gun. When Carl questions Hedy, she explains that these odd, mostly silent gremlin-like workers appear for a few hours after a race to handle most of the repairs before disappearing, leaving her to complete the upgrades. At the same time, Donut happily puts an Egyptian hat on Mongo and draws Rend's interest with a headband, but Hedy shifts the mood back to strategy by warning Carl to study the other racers carefully because some can be trusted and others will try to destroy them the moment the next heat begins. Carl answers that he trusts no one, confirming his mindset going forward.
