Chapter 111: A Liar and a Thief

Shehyn returns with Kvothe to find a shaken Tempi. Inside, Shehyn summons Carceret and bars Kvothe until she is ready to hear him. When called in, Kvothe faces peremptory questions about killing and the Lethani. Recognizing a test, he answers briefly and, slipping into Spinning Leaf, offers enigmatic replies linking the Lethani to laughing and following the moon.

The room’s tone shifts as Shehyn weighs his answers. Carceret argues Tempi has shamed the Adem and demands he be cut away, dismissing Kvothe as a liar and thief. Tempi defends principle over blind law but is rebuked. Shehyn counters that while barbarians cannot know the Ketan, destroying one who shows understanding of the Lethani would be wrong.

After a tense pause, Shehyn declares Tempi may not have erred and resolves to give Kvothe to Vashet, “the Hammer,” to test whether he is iron worth striking. Carceret approves the harsh choice; Tempi reacts with strained respect. Shehyn privately counsels Tempi, while Carceret signals silent contempt toward Kvothe, which he pointedly returns in kind.

A bell signals mealtime. Kvothe and Tempi eat in a quiet hall where the Adem converse softly and sign; many observe Kvothe’s foreign hair. Afterward, Tempi leads Kvothe to a small room with his belongings but no sword. Tempi advises civility, warns the new teacher will decide much, and says they will not see each other. Kvothe, exhausted, sleeps.
