Chapter 32: Blood and Ash
Overview
Kvothe unveils his completed gram to friends in a secluded clearing and subjects it to rigorous testing. Mola’s bindings and a burning mommet are fully deflected, proving the gram’s protection against malfeasance. The group confirms plans for tomorrow, and Kvothe’s debt to Devi is revealed, sharpening financial stakes.
Summary
Kvothe meets Mola, Fela, Wilem, and Simmon in a hidden forest hollow to reveal his newly finished gram, worn against his forearm for skin contact and secrecy. The group prepares a safe test with Mola present as physicker. Fela crafts a mommet using Kvothe’s hair and blood absorbed by ash, ensuring a strong sympathetic link.
After a false alarm prank from Kvothe unsettles Simmon, Mola takes over the testing. Kvothe lowers his Alar and asks for strikes to the leg first. Mola binds and pierces the doll’s leg with a hot pin; Kvothe feels only dull pressure as the gram chills against his skin. Further stabs to limbs produce the same harmless sensation while the gram grows colder.
Mola escalates by throwing the mommet into the fire with a binding. Sparks fly, the gram turns icy, and Kvothe experiences only a flickering warmth, then nothing as the wax melts and the link is destroyed. The test demonstrates that even Mola’s El’the-level effort cannot pierce the gram’s protection, though Kvothe notes overwhelming force—like a forge fire—might breach it.
They agree to proceed with their plan tomorrow. A stray remark exposes Kvothe’s debt to Devi, a former arcanist holding his blood as collateral, raising the risk of future malfeasance or sale of his blood. Despite these concerns, Kvothe returns to his room and, reassured by the gram’s chill against his skin, finally sleeps soundly.
