Chapter 136: Interlude—Close to Forgetting

Kvothe pauses the storytelling to ready dinner and sends Bast to Shep’s wake as an ambassador to town. He offers Chronicler supplies, casually revealing true Aruean ink, and confirms the sword on the wall is not Caesura. Kvothe hums through simple preparations as a storm threatens.

Two king’s soldiers enter, reveal they intend to rob the inn, and demand Kvothe’s purse. Kvothe feigns compliance, then strikes first, flooring the blonde soldier. The bearded soldier engages; Kvothe uses precise moves but is rattled by an elbow to the temple, then overwhelmed by body blows. Dazed, he fails a sympathy-like motion, is battered, and finally knocked down with a bottle.

As they kick him, Kvothe laughs darkly. Chronicler warns Bast will return soon; the soldiers grab wine and flee. Kvothe rises, bloodied, admitting he “forgot who I was” for a moment and asks for water and a cloth. Bast arrives, horrified; Kvothe deflects with a joke before conceding it was two soldiers. Bast presses why Kvothe allowed it; Kvothe snaps, then apologizes, citing lingering injuries from the scrael fight.

Bast seizes on that explanation with relief; Kvothe half-accepts it to calm him. Bast orders Kvothe to sit and takes command. He stitches Kvothe’s scalp with a hair-threaded needle, assesses a loosened tooth, and prepares a bowl of milk and honey, adding a drop of Kvothe’s blood. After both swish and spit, Bast’s milk shows the pink, drawing harm to himself, demonstrating a subtle working to aid Kvothe.

Bast calls Kvothe an idiot with weary affection, then commands food and the continuation of the tale. Blood on his teeth, he settles by the hearth like a stern patron. Kvothe, battered but composed, agrees to resume, the interlude reaffirming Bast’s protectiveness and Kvothe’s diminished present self.
