Chapter 25: Wrongful Apprehension
Overview
Fearing continued malfeasance, Kvothe seeks a protective gram. Kilvin refuses access to the restricted schema, granting only a workroom. Kvothe turns to fixer Sleat, who declines due to Kvothe’s debt to Devi but sells him a crossbow. With Fela, Kvothe scours the Archives for gram lore and finds nothing, committing to a longer search.
Summary
Pressed by ongoing malfeasance and unwilling to rely on Wilem and Simmon as constant guards, Kvothe decides he needs a gram—a sympathetic defense against bindings. He goes to Kilvin, who questions the need, notes grams help only somewhat against slippage, and refuses to share the restricted schema, which is reserved for El’the and involves dangerous blood-and-bone sygaldry. Kilvin does, however, grant Kvothe a large first-floor private workroom and access to precious metals from Stocks.
Blocked from official channels, Kvothe seeks information elsewhere and visits the Bale and Barley to approach Sleat, a discreet fixer. After trading rumors about each other, Kvothe asks Sleat to procure the restricted schema quickly. Sleat warns of Wrongful Apprehension penalties and quotes a steep price or a heavy future favor. When Sleat learns Kvothe owes Devi, he refuses any favor-based deal, citing Devi’s fierce claim on her debtors.
Kvothe needles Sleat but gets nowhere on the schema. Instead, he negotiates a separate purchase: a used stirrup-drawn crossbow in exchange for silver and fine gold wire, with delivery arranged covertly behind a tannery.
Turning to research, Kvothe meets Fela in the Archives, briefly fixating on the four-plate door before confiding the malfeasance and showing a bruise. Fela agrees to help and explains that much dangerous sygaldry is sequestered in masters’ private libraries. They gather cataloged sygaldry texts and spend hours reading, lowering expectations from a full schema to any hint of the runes required.
Despite sustained effort, Kvothe and Fela find nothing. Fela proposes a long, methodical trawl of the Stacks, warning it will take dozens of hours. Kvothe defends Simmon’s underestimated abilities and, resigned to the scope of the task, prioritizes continued searching as his best path to building a gram.
