Chapter 148: The Stories of Stones

On the ride back to Imre, Kvothe and Denna chat lightly about travels and his growing reputation, but avoid fraught topics: their Severen parting, Denna’s patron, and Felurian. In Imre, an awkward silence lingers as Kvothe leaves Denna at the Boar’s Head.

The next day Kvothe prepares carefully and meets Denna, who anticipates his arrival and brings lunch. They walk to a secluded dell of daisies and a stream. Denna playfully speaks of stones telling stories and dunks Kvothe; he answers with a summoned wave, and their water play slides toward charged intimacy.

Denna suns herself on a black rock while Kvothe serves strawberries. Feeling closeness restored, Kvothe resolves to broach the subject of her bruises and patron. Before he can, Denna notices Kvothe’s scars and learns he was whipped at the University, undercutting his planned argument for her to leave her own dangerous situation.

Flirtation and misread signals follow. When dressing to leave, Kvothe blurts a plea for love; Denna, wary of being “one of many,” withdraws. The atmosphere chills.

Kvothe then presents Denna’s lost ring—recovered from Ambrose. She is moved to tears and replaces it on her finger, but the earlier awkwardness returns. With weather turning, they head back to Imre, their connection tender yet unsettled and the matter of her patron unaddressed.
