Chapter 101: Close Enough to Touch

After gathering shadows for the shaed, Kvothe presses Felurian about her magic. Felurian’s answers are alternately simple and opaque: she demonstrates grasping a shadow as if plucking fruit, and names her work grammarie—the art of making things be—distinct from glamourie, the art of making things seem. Their attempts to translate Fae terms often collapse into confusing tangles.

Felurian also explains that conventional directions are meaningless in the Fae. Instead, subtle gradients in the twilight sky mark a compass: walking toward a brighter horizon leads to Day, darker to Night, with other axes described as Dark/Light, Summer/Winter, or Forward/Backward. Kvothe notes even her playful terms, suspecting jokes amid truths.

Kvothe reflects on his exceptional memory and finds it paradoxically patchy in the Fae. His recollection of Felurian herself, her lessons, and their intimacy is crystalline, but mundane logistics dissolve. He vividly recalls twilight dappling her skin and the warmth of lamplight, yet cannot remember any lamps, wicks, or the scent of smoke or oil.

Similarly, he remembers eating fruit, bread, honey, and meat—Felurian sometimes savoring it nearly raw—and washing sticky hands and blood at the pool. He recalls her eating flowers and their unfastidious, joyful meals. But he cannot remember how food arrived, rejecting both the idea of servants intruding and the image of Felurian baking bread.

Considering hunting, Kvothe can imagine Felurian taking down deer by hand or a shy hart wandering into her twilight glade. He envisions her waiting patiently until the creature draws close enough to touch, capturing how the Fae makes the practical inexplicable while the immediate and sensual remain intensely real.
