Chapter 87: The Lethani

Kvothe and Tempi walk to Crosson for supplies, trading Ademic words. A rustle in the woods spooks Kvothe into fearing a bandit ambush, but it proves to be deer. They reach the Laughing Moon inn, crowded with edgy, out-of-work mercenaries who eye Tempi’s Adem reds.

At a table, the bearded mercenary Tam confronts Tempi over his high day rate and worth in a fight. Misunderstandings escalate, and Tam calls three to face Tempi. Kvothe, fearing unfair odds, secretly draws a knife. When Tam headbutts to start the brawl, Tempi counters effortlessly and, in moments, drops Tam, a blonde woman, and a bald man with precise, efficient strikes.

The room’s mood softens as a bystander salutes Tempi’s restraint. Back at the table, Tempi checks if Kvothe “watched his back,” then notices the concealed knife and shows visible disapproval, promising to discuss it later.

On the road home, Tempi decides Kvothe must learn of the Lethani. He dispels myths of “secret power,” demonstrating practical defenses (angling the head to foil a headbutt) and stressing training over magic. He frames the Lethani as inner right action—neither law nor simple rules—likening it to finding the only true pass through mountains: difficult to see, easy to stray from.

Tempi explains that knowing when to fight or not is part of the Lethani; today’s public fight affirmed Adem reputation among “barbarians.” He rebukes Kvothe for being first with a knife, declaring fear cannot root the Lethani and that winning first by knife is not winning. Using the “tinker” custom, he illustrates that the Lethani is first knowing, then doing. Kvothe admits he does not understand; Tempi approves, calling that honesty itself of the Lethani.
