Chapter 34: Baubles

Overview

Kvothe retrieves Denna’s ring from a jeweler using the lifted claim slip, only to pay the repair himself. He discovers a costly emerald necklace a young woman sold, implying Denna’s sacrifice to buy his lute case. Learning Denna waited for him at the Barrel and Boar, Kvothe begins combing Imre to find her.

Summary

Kvothe receives no note from Denna and, in good spirits, skips Elodin’s class to search for her. He goes to a jeweler to redeem a ring using the claim slip he took from Ambrose, relieved when the clerk recognizes it and produces Denna’s ring.

The jeweler charges forty-five pennies for the repair, which Kvothe pays. While at the case, Kvothe notices an elegant teardrop emerald necklace. The jeweler explains a young woman sold it for money. The staggering price signals to Kvothe how valuable it is and what a sacrifice its owner made.

Thinking of Denna’s earlier note mentioning the Barrel and Boar, Kvothe heads there with the ring, hoping to return it and make amends. The host confirms a lovely dark-haired woman waited a long time the previous night, prompting Kvothe’s guilt and urgency.

With no message left for him and no sign of Denna, Kvothe begins a systematic search through Imre’s many inns and boarding houses, determined to find her and mindful of the cost she has borne.
