Chapter 126: The First Stone

Overview

Kvothe memorizes Saicere’s Atas in three days and recites it publicly, triggering his stone trial sooner than expected. Carceret, revealed as Larel’s daughter, stands at the first stone, furious over Kvothe bearing her mother’s sword. Despite Tempi’s warning, Kvothe is outmatched; after landing two blows, Carceret disables him and he yields, failing to gain the first stone.

Summary

Kvothe spends three days with Magwyn, laboriously memorizing the long Atas of Saicere. He recites it flawlessly by the third evening and again the next morning. Magwyn sends him to Shehyn, who notes Vashet is away and, with Kvothe’s hand already unbandaged, insists his stone trial proceed that day.

Unsure about the trial, Kvothe learns from Shehyn that he must first recite the Atas publicly, then climb the hill and fight ranked opponents at each stone. Shehyn frames it as a formality and warns he is unlikely to gain even the first stone. At the stone hill, a crowd gathers; Shehyn waits atop by a greystone, while Penthe stands at the third stone.

Tempi intercepts Kvothe and secretly warns that Carceret, at the first stone, is enraged—both by Kvothe’s admission and because Saicere belonged to her mother, Larel. Tempi urges caution, warning Carceret might deliberately injure him and advising him to submit quickly if caught in certain holds.

Magwyn leads the ceremony. Kvothe stands upon the first stone and publicly recites Saicere’s lineage for nearly an hour. Afterward, he ascends to face Carceret, who discards her training sword and gestures contempt. Kvothe follows suit, and they square off unarmed.

Carceret toys with Kvothe, feinting and inviting him on. Kvothe attempts to provoke her and uses an unorthodox escape (Celean’s Break Lion) to free his wrist, landing two quick techniques—Sowing Barley and Turn Millstone—barely inconveniencing her but enraging her further. Maintaining control, Carceret times Bargeman at the Dock, catching the off-balance Kvothe and knocking him hard to the ground.

Recognizing he is outmatched and at risk of serious injury, Kvothe remains down, effectively yielding. The trial ends with him failing to take the first stone, his speed with the Atas contrasted by his current fighting limitations and Carceret’s furious, disciplined superiority.
