Chapter 63: The Gilded Cage

Overview

Confined to the Maer’s estate, Kvothe’s credibility erodes as the flits stay healthy and Stapes remains hostile. The Maer has Kvothe drink laudanum-laced tea, and Caudicus grows suspicious of him. Fearing exposure, Kvothe scouts an escape route and witnesses Stapes meeting secretly with Caudicus at night.

Summary

Kvothe remains confined to his rooms to attend the recovering Maer Alveron, despite yearning to return to Severen-Low to find Denna. He passes time playing tak with Bredon, who leaves his game table with Kvothe, and fends off court gossips inspired by Caudicus’ rumor of his “story genealogy,” accumulating written slanders.

Summoned, Kvothe finds the Maer improved and reading, but ignored. He refreshes tea, checks the gilded cage, and notes the flits remain vigorous despite three days of poisoned feed, undercutting his case. The Maer then has Kvothe drink the untouched tea; Kvothe realizes it contains laudanum—harmless to an addict tapering, but strong enough to fog him—suggesting the Maer is testing him.

Drugged, Kvothe visits Caudicus for another dose. When asked to hand over acid, he nearly reveals his knowledge but bluffs with noble arrogance, prompting a speculative look from Caudicus. Kvothe leaves with the medicine, aware Caudicus is suspicious. He doses the flits again under Stapes’ hostile gaze while the Maer ignores him.

Accepting that visible proof may not come, Kvothe maps the estate and finalizes an escape plan should the flits fail to die. Late that night he slips out to scout the gardens and rooftops. He spots sympathy lamps burning in Caudicus’ tower and, peering in, sees Caudicus meeting privately with Stapes. Stapes, agitated and empty-handed, departs—evidence to Kvothe that the manservant is secretly colluding with the Maer’s would-be poisoner.
