Chapter 100: Shaed

Overview

Kvothe observes the Fae’s timeless dusk and its sleeping, aware presence. Felurian, anxious about his safety, decides to make him a shaed—a cloak of shadow—for stealth and protection. She leads him through peril, averts an unseen threat, summons guiding moths, and sews shadow with starlight, then hangs the fledgling cloak to acclimate.

Summary

Kvothe reflects on the Fae’s strangeness: an unchanging twilight and a pervasive sense that the land itself sleeps lightly, aware of his presence. He worries about time’s flow between realms but tries not to dwell on it. Felurian, troubled by his intent to leave yet return, repeatedly seeks promises of his safety.

Noting Kvothe’s scars and lack of weapons, Felurian concludes he must be quiet, quick, and safe from iron, cold, and spite; she resolves to make him a shaed. She leads him naked into deepening darkness. When Kvothe creates sympathetic light, Felurian snaps it out and tackles him as something vast and silent passes overhead. With soft words and a breath that halts and restarts his heart, she dispels the immediate threat.

They proceed without light. Felurian emits a near-silent purr, drawing countless pale, luminescent moths that outline their path. Guided by flickers through varied, unseen terrain, they reach an utterly dark clearing where the land feels on the verge of waking. Felurian hums, moves about collecting unseen materials, then leads Kvothe back toward faint starlight.

Avoiding the beams, she sits and casually draws strands of starlight into her lap, sewing them into a dark, soft mass—shadow shaped into a cloak. Kvothe recognizes she is crafting a shaed: shadow sewn with starlight. He questions her, but her effortless making lies outside his sympathetic understanding, leaving him jealous and awed.

As the first hint of twilight returns, Felurian drapes the fledgling shaed on a tree to “seduce” it gently, saying shadow fears flame. The cloak must acclimate to light. Kvothe leaves with Felurian, understanding both the perilous, living quiet of the Fae and the protective gift taking shape for him.
