Chapter 144: Sword and Shaed

With Alveron’s credit and a bursting purse, Kvothe’s winter term becomes comfortable and unhurried. He enjoys proper clothes, food, and time to tinker rather than grind in the Fishery. Recognizing University taboos against weapons, Kvothe hides the irreplaceable sword Caesura in the Underthing to keep it safe from theft.

Kvothe keeps his shaed at hand, subtly reshaping it and noting others’ obliviousness to its odd behavior. Elodin alone recognizes it, calling it a shaed and questioning how Kvothe became “enshaedn.” Over mulled cider, Kvothe recounts his accidental journey into the Fae and struggle with Felurian. Elodin probes Kvothe’s naming, confirms calling the wind should grow easier, and proposes that Kvothe also spoke Felurian’s true name, a rarer, deeper feat.

When Elodin asks Kvothe to attempt naming, Kvothe can only manage a tentative “maybe,” unable to summon the wind on request. Elodin treats this as progress and sets private studies to pursue naming methodically, viewing Kvothe’s inadvertent successes as promising signs.

Freed from grinding poverty, Kvothe broadens his coursework: sympathy, medicine, and artificing, plus chemistry, herbology, and comparative female anatomy. Curious about the Lockless box, he hunts Yllish story knots, unearths a hidden archive of spooled knotwork in the Stacks, but cannot read them without the language.

Master Linguist (Herma) summons Kvothe, reveals he speaks Yllish, and offers personal tutoring, which Kvothe eagerly accepts. Kvothe finds Herma an unexpectedly witty, gentle teacher compared to his stern chancellorial persona, while Elodin guides him privately in naming with clearer purpose.

Count Threpe, delighted by Kvothe’s survival, hosts a resurrection party where Kvothe appears in nostalgic troupe colors. In private, Kvothe relates edited adventures, omitting Felurian and much of the Maer’s business, and allows Threpe to deem Alveron’s rewards generous without protest.
