Alone in his newly assigned suite, Kvothe enjoys the space for music, appreciating armless chairs ideal for playing his lute. While he relaxes with wine and improvises, the Maer Alveron arrives through the private passage, pleased with Kvothe’s accommodations and curious about his music.

Alveron confirms he moved Kvothe near his own rooms to facilitate frequent, discreet meetings about courting Meluan Lackless. After hearing samples of Kvothe’s playing, the Maer asks for compositions and possibly letters to suit Meluan’s tastes during a month of festivities celebrating his recovery.
