Chapter 74: Rumors
Overview
Kvothe, hungover after arguing with Denna, distracts himself with court gossip that clarifies Meluan Lackless’s hatred of the Ruh. Maer Alveron arrives, newly betrothed, and reveals northern tax collectors are vanishing.
He recruits Kvothe to lead a discreet team against bandits in the Eld. Kvothe departs, suspects he’s being sidelined, but resolves to find the bandits and secure the Maer’s lasting debt.
Summary
After quarreling with Denna, Kvothe wakes late and, too proud to seek her out, broods over wine and a stack of scandal sheets. The rumors reveal sordid court secrets, including that Netalia Lackless ran off with performers, leaving Meluan sole heir—explaining Meluan’s deep prejudice against the Edema Ruh.
Maer Alveron enters via a secret passage, announcing his formal troth with Meluan but confessing a crisis: multiple northern tax collectors have vanished on the king’s road, their escorts killed and revenues stolen. Patrols have found nothing, and Alveron suspects leaks within his guard and possibly the use of “magic.”
Asked for help, Kvothe proposes protective artificing and a small, stealthy search party. Alveron already has four specialists ready—tracker, two foresters, and an Adem—and pointedly asks Kvothe to lead them, valuing both competence and arcane knowledge. Kvothe agrees, and they study maps of the Eld before Stapes equips him and spirits him out through hidden passages with money in lieu of official writs to avoid tipping off informants.
Before leaving Severen-Low at dawn, Kvothe realizes he forgot essentials and detours to retrieve his repaired lute, breaking in to reclaim it. He then meets the four mercenaries north of Severen and sets off.
On the road, with a fading hangover, Kvothe reinterprets Alveron’s motives: the Maer likely wants him out of the way now that the betrothal is secured, expecting a fruitless month-long chase. Irritated but pragmatic, Kvothe commits to proving himself again by finding the bandits so “third time pays for all,” binding the Maer further in his debt.
