Summary
Kvothe opts to travel by water to Severen: downriver to Tarbean, through the Refting Strait, along the coast to Junpui, then up the Arrand River. He chooses this route overland for safety and speed, expecting roughly a dozen days and hoping to satisfy his curiosity about the sea.
He anticipates possible boredom but instead encounters a series of serious complications. The journey brings storm, piracy, treachery, and shipwreck—though not in that order—forcing Kvothe into quick decisions and risky actions, some heroic and some ill-advised.
At one point he is robbed, nearly drowned, and left penniless in Junpui. To survive he begs for food, steals a pair of shoes, and even performs poetry, revealing the depth of his desperation and adaptability.
