Chapter 149: Tangled

Kvothe finds Anker’s nearly empty and joins Simmon and Fela. Prodded about his day with Denna, Kvothe reluctantly sketches the situation, admitting confusion. As Laurel brings soup, Fela and Sim debate Kvothe’s manner with women. Fela praises his attentive gaze but notes it has turned almost physically evocative since his return, which briefly sparks Simmon’s jealousy before Fela reassures him.

Pressed for advice, Fela tells Kvothe that while he is fascinating, women want devotion, and his reputation makes him seem distant. Kvothe protests Denna’s double standards, but Fela relays what women say: he is charming, polite, not grabby—yet emotionally removed. She adds that she would expect him to eventually leave for something more important. Sim counters that Kvothe would upend the world for Denna, but Fela says such devotion is easier to see from a distance. Kvothe denies being in love, claiming he cannot love what he does not understand, which Sim gently mocks.

Kvothe then seeks Master Elodin, finding him in a garden. Kvothe asks what it means if a girl keeps changing her name. Elodin panics, fearing dangerous true-name meddling, then relaxes when Kvothe clarifies it is mere calling. Elodin suggests shifting names could reflect dissatisfaction, changeable nature, or a desire to become someone else, which Kvothe dismisses as vague.

To change the subject, Kvothe recounts how he called the wind in Tarbean. Elodin listens eagerly and praises the subtlety and control, noting Kvothe has now done it three times this term. Elodin slyly asks how long until Kvothe makes a ring of air. Kvothe hints he might already wear one, leaving Elodin uncertain whether Kvothe is serious.
