Chapter 62: Crisis
Overview
Kvothe balances appearances while the Maer endures withdrawal, then is ordered to fetch medicine from Caudicus. In the tower, Kvothe confirms Caudicus’s scholarly stature and true Arcanum guilder, learns Lackless lore, and watches a lead-tainted, ophalum-laced tonic prepared. Returning, Kvothe doses the Maer’s birds and sees Alveron recover yet remain openly cautious and noncommittal toward him.
Summary
Before dawn, Kvothe stocks more cod liver oil and scans Tinnery Street for Denna, then returns to the Maer’s estates to maintain normal appearances. He plays tak with Bredon, who recounts a brutal past punishment by the Maer and explains ring politics, highlighting Stapes’s unusual influence despite lacking title.
As hours pass without a summons, Kvothe fears the Maer may have died and contemplates flight. A terse summons finally arrives. In the sickroom, selas flowers mask the sour air; Alveron looks exhausted but improved and claims he has “passed the crisis.” He pointedly notes his birds’ health and asks Kvothe to fetch medicine from Caudicus, signaling continued doubt about poisoning.
At Caudicus’s tower, Kvothe reclaims rings from a display, probes about the Chandrian and is dismissed as superstitious, then listens to detailed history of the Lackless family and their older “Lockless” name. While Caudicus prepares the Maer’s tonic, Kvothe observes components that would dissolve lead and include ophalum, suspects incompetence, then tests Caudicus’s amulet and confirms it as a true Arcanum guilder—proof Caudicus knows exactly what he is doing.
Kvothe returns, refills the sipquicks’ feeders with the warm medicine, and exchanges polite small talk with the Maer. Alveron’s improvement is evident, but his reserve and carefully neutral demeanor make his stance clear: he is keeping options open and does not trust Kvothe.
