Chapter 94: Over Rock and Root
Overview
The company follows a shortcut west, only to be mired in an unmarked swamp that slows them to a crawl. Tempi begins Kvothe’s true Ketan training while Kvothe teaches Tempi the lute. After a grueling day and a tender moment between Dedan and Hespe, they follow distant singing to a moonlit pool and confront the legendary Felurian.
Summary
Kvothe’s group chooses to trust the stolen map and cut straight west toward Crosson, hoping to intercept the road even if they miss the town. Progress is slow because of Hespe’s leg, and during frequent rests Tempi begins Kvothe’s formal instruction in the Ketan, exposing numerous mistakes and reshaping Kvothe’s understanding of the training. In return, Kvothe starts teaching Tempi basic notes and chords on the lute as they walk.
Their plan falters when they hit an unmarked, foul-smelling swamp near midmorning. Testing every step, they creep forward through mud, sinkholes, and swarms of biting insects. Dedan slips and soaks everyone, sparking irritable banter. By afternoon they abandon hopes of reaching the road and simply search for any dry ground, but the marsh stretches on.
At sunset they finally climb out of the mire into chill, damp air and decide to press farther for cleaner terrain. Under a full moon, spirits lift as Dedan supports the exhausted Hespe; their playful exchange turns unexpectedly gentle, and Marten notes it with a quiet smile. They find a clear stream, wash off the swamp, change clothes, and warm themselves as best they can.
Hearing faint singing upstream, they hasten along the water, encouraged by the prospect of a town or inn. The stream widens and quiets into a bright, moonlit pool in a clearing. The singing ceases; no road or firelight appears. There, seated on a smooth rock by the water, they behold Felurian. Awe and disbelief ripple through the group as Marten prays softly and Kvothe whispers denial before recognizing her.
