Chapter 139: Lockless

Stapes escorts Meluan to meet the Maer Alveron and Kvothe, bringing a heavy, brass-bound chest. Meluan opens a locked outer chest to reveal a smaller inner one, then produces a dark, seamless wooden box—the Lockless Box—said to be a closely guarded family secret. Kvothe inspects it, noting subtle carved patterns and an intense weight, and suggests the carvings might form a Yllish story knot. He estimates the box’s age at roughly three thousand years and theorizes the wood is a slow, metal-rich spicewood.

Pressed about contents and purpose, Kvothe deduces something small and heavy inside, possibly glass or stone, and argues the box may lock something away—perhaps dangerous—rather than merely protect a precious item. He cannot find any seam or method to open it, and Meluan refuses to risk damage or to involve outsiders. The box is returned to its chest, and the Maer moves to postpone further business to the next day.

Kvothe insists on addressing an urgent matter: a writ of patronage from one of the Maer’s troupes. He reveals the troupe was slain. Under Meluan’s hostile views of the Ruh, Kvothe admits he killed the nine men after they abducted and abused two young girls. A legal and moral debate follows; Meluan applauds his action, while the Maer condemns extrajudicial killings and questions authority and proof.

Kvothe explains the slain men were impostors who had stolen the writ and posed as Edema Ruh. Challenged on credibility, he asserts that true Ruh would not commit such acts. Pressed further, Kvothe declares he is Edema Ruh. Meluan, shocked and disgusted, leaves. The Maer, angered by the concealment and Kvothe’s cutting remarks about Meluan’s family, ends the meeting coldly. Kvothe withdraws, recognizing he has endangered his standing with Alveron.
