Chapter 4: Tar and Tin

Kvothe describes the University town’s trade, emphasizing how the Artificery’s wares fund students through commissions. Seeking quick sales before tuition comes due, Kvothe consults the Stocks and learns a caravan has cleared out their deck lamps. He commits to building two sympathy lamps, despite the tedious, failure-prone work.

At the Stocks, Kvothe finds Re’lar Jaxim demoted to menial duty after a prior fire, underscoring Kilvin’s lingering displeasure. Kvothe lists materials and spends the day laboring in the Fishery, leaving late at night exhausted and reeking of smoke and metal.

Kvothe stops at Anker’s for cold potatoes, squash, and beer, then climbs to the rooftops to meet Auri. They exchange playful, careful banter; Auri notes boundaries that keep her comfortable. Because of the chill, Auri leads Kvothe into the Underthing, where they warm the potatoes on exposed steam pipes and share a quiet, ritualized meal without personal questions.

They discuss music: Auri wants Kvothe to play soon; Kvothe promises his lute in six nights after admissions, and she presses for sooner. Their bond is gentle but bounded by Auri’s rules. Afterward, Auri guides Kvothe through the Nodway, Vaults, and Billows—her intimate map of the Underthing.

Kvothe, banned from the Archives, uses Auri’s route to reach a hidden ventilation access. He crawls a narrow, filthy passage to slip inside, accepting the risk of expulsion because poor admissions results would ruin him anyway. Comfortable in the Archives’ perpetual night, he prepares to study despite the ban.
