Chapter 82: Barbarians

At dawn, the group splits duties: Tempi and Kvothe move camp while Dedan and Hespe return to Crosson for supplies and Marten scouts a new site near water. They establish the new camp, and Marten heads out to hunt, leaving Kvothe and Tempi together.

With privacy, Kvothe melts tinker candles to craft two crude wax mommets for future sympathetic use, then hides them. Tempi returns from bathing, matter-of-factly naked, and consults Kvothe about a tick. Kvothe notices Tempi’s many shallow scars and teaches him how to crush the insect.

Kvothe observes a recurring brushing gesture in Tempi’s left hand and asks its meaning, uncovering that Ademic uses hand-speech for emotions and nuance. Tempi explains left-hand primacy (close to the heart; clever vs. strong), demonstrates subtle distinctions, and frames facial expressions as rude among strangers. He contrasts natural impulses with “civilization,” argues laughter and crying live in the belly and shouldn’t be suppressed, and labels outlanders “barbarians” who never learned this refinement.

Determined to prove he can learn, Kvothe practices for hours, slowly acquiring a handful of gestures and the concept of understatement. The two exchange vocabulary as Tempi encourages in his minimal way. Tempi performs his slow martial dance, the Ketan; nettled yet intrigued, Kvothe attempts to mirror him and discovers its exacting complexity.

As evening settles, Kvothe cooks while Tempi calmly uses his prized sword to peel potatoes, prioritizing sharpness and cleanliness over taboo. Between meals and a second round of stretches and Ketan, Kvothe continues practicing, embracing the challenge and deepening rapport with Tempi.
