Chapter 147: Debts

Kvothe donates five talents, assists with chores and remedies, and gifts Trapis stockings and shoes before leaving so his presence won’t drive the children away.

Determined to harry Ambrose from afar, Kvothe composes a forged letter implying a noblewoman’s pregnancy and seals it to look authentic and tear-stained. Disguised under a beggar’s hat and using a Vintish accent, he sells delivery of the letter to a drover bound past Imre, ensuring it will reach Ambrose with suggestive provenance.

After bathing and laundering his clothes, Kvothe visits a well-placed taproom to listen to tales about himself. He hears wild claims—an amber ring to command demons, a cloak of shadows—and the spreading moniker “Kvothe the Arcane,” noting how myth now engulfs fragments of truth like Trebon.

The inn’s door bursts open as a young woman struggles to breathe, her wealthy escort panicking. Kvothe takes command, has a sailor remove the man, and calms the woman—who proves to be Denna. Placing his hands to steady her, he listens and speaks a Name, restoring her breath. Onlookers attribute it to magic, reinforcing his legend.

With the escort gone, Kvothe and Denna talk privately. She asks about his travels and invites herself to ride with him back toward the University the next day. Kvothe notices a six-strand Yllish braid in her hair and partially reads it, embarrassing Denna into undoing it. They discuss the pressures of wealthy suitors, the meaning of gifts, and flirt with the idea of adornment that suits her. Denna, admitting she sought him by returning to the region, takes his arm and asks him to take her away, sealing their plan to travel together.
