Chapter 76: Tinder
Overview
While making camp, Kvothe asserts authority over Dedan and dramatically kindles a fire with sympathy, alarming the Vintish companions. The shock cools into wary respect over two days. Seeking rapport, Kvothe asks Tempi about the Lethani, but Tempi refuses, underscoring cultural distance and Kvothe’s limited influence over the Adem.
Summary
The group makes camp on their second night. As Kvothe sets the fire pit, Tempi silently prepares fine tinder with his razor-sharp sword. Dedan returns and condescends about fire-making, provoking Kvothe to confront him by invoking the Maer’s judgment in appointing him leader.
To end the dispute decisively, Kvothe uses sympathy to ignite the tinder instantly. Dedan, Marten, and Hespe react with superstitious fear, seeing Kvothe as a dangerous arcanist. Recognizing words won’t soothe them, Kvothe withdraws, allowing the moment to stand. The fear curbs Dedan’s grumbling, yielding reluctant compliance.
Over the next two days, with no further displays of magic, tensions ease. Dedan still blusters but stops calling Kvothe “boy,” and complaints diminish, giving Kvothe modest operational control of the party.
At a midday halt, Kvothe attempts to build rapport with Tempi, sitting beside him and opening a conversation about the Lethani. Tempi briefly meets his eyes, then refuses, stating the Lethani is not for Kvothe and warning him not to ask. Kvothe notes Tempi can speak more when he chooses, but the cultural barrier remains firm.
