Chapter 14: The Hidden City

Kvothe reflects that scouring Elodin’s book list taught him the Archives’ inner workings. He compares the place to a city with busy districts like the Scriptorium and Sorting Hall, and specialized areas such as the Buggery, Cataloger’s Mew, and the Bindery. He notes neglected “bad neighborhoods” in the Stacks, where old systems and lost ledgers leave books half-forgotten, and he recalls the enigmatic four-plate door at the heart of it all.

Drawn to those neglected sections, Kvothe searches for information on the Chandrian. He spends days sifting through children’s stories and morality plays that reduce the Chandrian to mischievous figures, extracting only familiar signs like blue flame, rot, rust, and a chill. Fearing both ridicule and the Chandrian’s violent suppression of knowledge, Kvothe asks no one for help and continues alone.

He eventually finds The Book of Secrets, a bestiary-like children’s primer whose Chandrian entry is an empty framed page with a vapid poem, underscoring how the wider world dismisses them as myths. Certain of his own experience—Cinder’s black eyes and Haliax’s shrouding shadow—Kvothe persists. Meanwhile, his fascination with free access to the Archives deepens; he reads widely, lingers in reading holes, misses meals, and becomes one of the last students out each night.

Amid this routine of classes, music at Anker’s, and obsessive study, Kvothe delays visiting Imre. When he finally returns to the Grey Man with a playful calling card for Denna, the porter informs him she no longer resides there, refuses to take a message, and offers no forwarding information. Kvothe is left with no lead on Denna even as his search for the Chandrian remains fruitless.
