Chapter 60: Wisdom’s Tool
Overview
Kvothe reveals his Arcanum training to the Maer and proves Caudicus’s medicine is poisoning him with lead and denner resin. He proposes a bird test, prepares withdrawal remedies, and secures funds and supplies discreetly. Returning from Severen-Low, Kvothe unexpectedly reunites with Denna, who departs swiftly but leaves an address.
Summary
Kvothe privately tells Maer Alveron he is a University arcanist and, pressed for proof, snuffs a candle and kindles his ring to glow. He explains he lied to Caudicus to observe the Maer’s medicine and now believes it is poisoning the Maer. When Alveron demands proof and his dose, Kvothe lists precise symptoms, winning the Maer’s cautious attention.
Kvothe identifies lead as the chief toxin and denner resin (ophalum) as an addictive palliative added to ensure compliance, likely with agents to prevent vomiting. Alveron struggles to believe Caudicus guilty, but Kvothe proposes a test: feed the medicine, mixed with nectar, to small garden birds to observe rapid effects.
Alveron summons his trusted manservant Stapes to fetch “flits” and, at Kvothe’s urging for discretion, invents a harmless pretext. Kvothe warns of impending withdrawal—sweats, cramps, nausea, and more—and offers to mix laudanum and other aids, noting that lead must be drawn out over time. Alveron funds Kvothe’s purchases, and Stapes returns with a cage of birds; Kvothe doses their feeders and places the cage where the Maer can watch.
Kvothe heads to Severen-Low under the eyes of curious courtiers. To mislead any spies and avoid alerting Caudicus, he eats publicly, buys tippling flasks, tips a street troupe, then acquires laudanum and other remedies while feigning interest in impotence cures to seed a distracting rumor. He also redeems his pawned lute, nearly emptying the Maer’s purse.
Riding the noble horse lift back to Severen-High, Kvothe admires the city below. At the top he unexpectedly meets Denna; they embrace, but she must depart at once on the descending lift. As she vanishes into the dark, Denna calls out an address—Tinnery Street—leaving Kvothe with renewed longing and a clear place to find her.
