Chapter 22: Slipping

Overview

Kvothe excels in Adept Sympathy duels, becoming the top Re’lar and drawing Elxa Dal’s concern about overexertion. Dal demonstrates the power and subtlety of true Naming, challenging Kvothe’s doubts. Kvothe consults Count Threpe about Denna’s shadowy patron and receives a warning. Returning to the University, Kvothe endures a terrifying episode of searing internal heat.

Summary

In Adept Sympathy, Elxa Dal’s lessons move from numbing theory on slippage and energy math to competitions testing precision, focus, and control. Cautioned by Manet’s grisly anecdotes about thermal and kinetic slippage, Kvothe approaches class with heightened care and quickly rises to first in a field of twenty-three Re’lar.

When dueling begins, Kvothe remains undefeated despite exhaustion and injuries, performing complex feats while Fenton opposes him. Dal praises his record but plans to pit pairs against him to prevent complacency and notices Kvothe’s worsening fatigue. Kvothe admits to recent heat exhaustion; Dal warns against compounding strain.

Discussing Naming, Kvothe confesses frustration with Elodin’s methods. Dal reveals he knows the names of fire and one other but stresses the etiquette of secrecy. He demonstrates true Naming by igniting a distant brazier and then placing his hand unharmed into hot coals, asserting that names confer real understanding and power, though he defers deeper explanation to Elodin.

After class, Kvothe seeks Denna in Imre but doesn’t find her. At the Eolian, he speaks with Stanchion and Count Threpe. Threpe invites him to dinner, which Kvothe defers for lack of proper clothes. Kvothe discreetly asks Threpe’s opinion about a friend’s secretive patron; Threpe warns such secrecy may signal exploitation, though some patrons cultivate artists privately.

Walking back toward the University, Kvothe is suddenly seized by intense, migrating internal heat along his left side and chest. He strips and plunges into a cold stream to cool himself as the burning travels through his body and head before subsiding. Shaken and drenched, Kvothe resumes the walk, deeply afraid of the unexplained episode.
