Chapter 64: Flight

Kvothe, sidelined at the Maer’s court and shadowed by guards, slips out through the gardens and rooftops to Severen-Low. He finds Denna, spends the afternoon with her, and learns she has formal patronage from the same secret man Kvothe calls Master Ash. Concerned and angry over past abuse, Kvothe confronts her; Denna deflects, insisting on secrecy and her patron’s generosity. They part on good terms, planning to ride the next day, though Denna still nurses bruised ribs from a recent fall.

Returning to the Maer’s estate, Kvothe discovers he’s been ordered confined. He pushes past the guards to confront Alveron, but the Maer’s cold authority forces Kvothe to recognize his peril. At that tense moment, Stapes appears clutching a dead sipquick. Questioned, Stapes admits he’s been quietly replacing multiple dead birds to spare the Maer worry, revealing sincere devotion rather than treachery. The Maer’s anger dissolves; Kvothe, the Maer, and Stapes reconcile over supper.

Alveron summons Commander Dagon and orders Caudicus arrested, alive but harshly restrained against arcane threats. Kvothe advises precautions; Dagon departs. Soon a guard reports a lethal disturbance in Caudicus’s tower, Anders dead, and Caudicus gone. Kvothe deduces Caudicus realized the Maer wasn’t ingesting his doses because the vial tasted sweet instead of bitter, prompting his flight. Kvothe warns against entering the trapped tower.

To preserve his marriage prospects, the Maer insists on secrecy about the poisoning, privately declaring Kvothe perfectly trustworthy and promising substantial future assistance instead of public reward. Kvothe, elated by the restored favor and open-ended pledge, prepares to leave. Stapes embraces him, deeply grateful, and presses into Kvothe’s hand two rings bearing Stapes’s name—one silver, one smooth white—signifying personal obligation.
