Chapter 12: The Sleeping Mind
Overview
Kvothe is summoned by Master Kilvin over a rumor that he sold false charms; Kvothe denies it and the concern is set aside. In Elodin’s inaugural class, a demonstration shows the “sleeping mind” can grasp what calculation cannot. Elodin tasks the students to seek a small name and track down obscure books in the Stacks.
Summary
Kvothe wakes excited for Elodin’s naming class but heads first to the Fishery to work toward paying his debt. Master Kilvin summons Kvothe to his office, citing a distressed girl who sought a red-haired “young wizard” selling charms. Kilvin warns that false charms are forbidden and unethical.
Kvothe denies selling charms, arguing both poverty and principle. Considering Ambrose’s past malice, Kvothe suggests someone may be trying to get him in trouble. Kilvin, partially reassured, sets the matter aside with a cautionary remark.
Before noon, Kvothe arrives early to Elodin’s class in Mains. Six other students filter in: Fenton, Fela, Brean, Jarret, Inyssa, and Uresh. Elodin arrives late and bluntly sets rules: obey instructions and believe certain statements until told otherwise. He distinguishes calling names from true names and demonstrates the complexity of even a single stone’s name.
Elodin assigns an impossible task: predict the exact path of a thrown stone so they can catch it. After collaborative but futile calculations, Elodin has a young runner, Henri, effortlessly catch the stone, illustrating the “sleeping mind” that grasps patterns beyond conscious calculation.
Elodin reveals that Inyssa has spoken iron, Fela intuits stone, and Kvothe has called the wind, framing their potential. He instructs each student to seek affinity with a small name—iron, fire, wind, water, wood, or stone—and posts a list of important books to find, none in Tomes, forcing them to explore the Stacks. He exits without further explanation, leaving the class to ponder names and their new assignment.
