Chapter 31: The Crucible

With his lute returned, Kvothe feels balanced again; work in the Fishery, classes, and even Elodin’s lessons seem easier. In this improved mood, he visits Simmon in the alchemy complex, where Simmon excitedly announces success on a project.

Simmon demonstrates a translucent compound by coating his finger, then pressing it against a heated iron pan without injury. Kvothe labels it a heat shield, but Simmon corrects him: it is not insulation so much as a sacrificial layer that degrades under heat. Simmon insists Kvothe listen, stressing that alchemy is not intuitive and that careless assumptions can be deadly.

Simmon details the rules: apply it quickly and evenly up to the mid-forearm; avoid touching the face; it is “sort of” poisonous; it has no telltale smell; it begins to burn away immediately under heat, offering no warning when it is nearly spent; and tools are safer than bare hands. Mixed with alcohol it turns mildly acidic; sweat is fine; but when highly diluted with water it becomes flammable.

When Kvothe scoffs that nothing becomes flammable by adding water, Simmon contaminates a crucible of water and pours it onto the hot pan, producing a burst of orange flame. Convinced, Kvothe admits, “I know nothing about alchemy,” and Simmon reviews the instructions again, underscoring both the salve’s usefulness and its dangers.
